The organization for St. John's Church as a parish for people of German descent takes us back to the pioneer days of 1869.  The faithful of so called section of South Erie, Marvintown, worshipped at St. Mary's on Ninth Street.  These settlers, conversant only in their mother's tongue, hailed it as God sent when the German Benedictine Fathers from East Ninth Street came to them.  Thus St. John's Church began as a mission to St. Mary's Church and in late 1869 organized as a parish.
